JOHN BIFFED IT!!!

So today around 5pm I got a call on the phone from John. He was on a mountain bike trip and he called me to pick him up because he crashed. Cory and I went to pick him up. He was walking fine and things, but his face was mangled. After a long ride with speeds up to 50 mph, he was just winding down the last stretch when suddenly he saw a guy down the trail a ways. He slowed to about 5mph and got to one side of the trail when the trail under him gave way and he face planted into the dirt. We took him to the urgent care center, but he had lacerations deep inside of his lower lip. So we took him to the ER and they called in an oral surgeon. He had a another deep laceration on his forehead in the shape of a Y. Other than some cuts and scrapes, he is ok. Oh yes, and he chipped his tooth. Good thing our deductible is already met this year!! No broken bones, but just cuts and scrapes. He will be fine, but a little tender for a while. That was a scare, but everything is OK. At the hospital Cory was so interested in what was going on, he stared over the doctor's shoulder during the whole thing and asked all kinds of questions all along the way while Shaely and I sat and talked. (We weren't really interested in the mess of gore.)
Here are all the pictures:
Look at that big hole where is lip ripped open
Y cut in the forehead:
After the surgery, but before getting cleaned up:
Chipped tooth action:
Here is the mess made after it all. There was a vein that was cut during his wreck that would not stop bleeding. The doctor tried to coderize it, but it wouldn't seal. So he lasso'd it with some synthetic thread that dissolves in time and tied it off and then closed the stitches.

  1. Holy Smokes! I can't believe that happened. I like it how mom puts "good thing our deductible was met." I suppose it wouldn't have been if he had preformed this stunt in the summer time. Where was dad biking that he could obtain 50 mph speeds? Sounds like he would have to be on a paved road.

  2. Oh my heavens!! I am glad he's okay. That's so sad. I like how he's still trying to give a smile for a camera shot after his surgery. Poor guy. Get better Dad!

  4. Oh My! So sorry about that! Glad it wasn't worse, but it looks like he's going to have a little recuperation period. Get well soon!

  5. I did not write the post! Cory took liberties to add a lot of embelishing. Dad doesn't ride like that! And our deductible is met because of Cory. He had an ER bill back on his mission. Just so you know I am not that mean!

  7. And just like that, I'm no longer interested in mountain biking. Unless I'm in my Land Cruiser.
